Ten things to do on a new iPhone
The settings we change on every new phone, from Stolen Device Protection to battery charging limits.
Ten minutes on day one saves a lot of trouble later. This is the checklist we run through every time.
- Turn on Stolen Device Protection (Settings → Face ID & Passcode). It requires biometrics for sensitive changes when you are away from familiar places.
- Check Find My is on, including the Find My network.
- Use a longer passcode. Six digits is the minimum; an alphanumeric code is better.
- Set up iCloud Backup — or regular backups to your Mac.
- Review charging options. Recent models let you limit charging to 80% to reduce battery wear.
- Trim notifications and try a Focus mode for work and sleep.
- Turn on Advanced Data Protection if you understand the recovery trade-offs.
- Add a recovery contact for your Apple Account.
- Review app permissions for location, photos, contacts and tracking.
- Customise the Action button and Control Center with shortcuts you actually use.
Bonus: write your Apple Account recovery details on paper and keep them somewhere safe. It is the single most useful thing you can do if you ever lose your phone.
