MacBook Air or MacBook Pro: how to choose
We get this question more than any other. For most people the answer is the Air — but there are four honest reasons to spend more.
1. Do you work under sustained load?
The Air has no fan. Short bursts are as fast as the Pro, but long exports, compiles or renders will slow down as it warms up. If that is your daily work, the Pro’s cooling pays for itself.
2. How many ports do you need?
The Pro adds HDMI, an SD card slot and more Thunderbolt ports. If you live with a dock anyway, this matters less.
3. How much do you care about the display?
The Pro’s mini-LED screen is brighter, supports high refresh rates and handles HDR content. For text and web, the Air’s display is excellent already.
4. Memory first, chip second
Whatever you choose, prioritise memory over a faster chip. It is the one thing you cannot upgrade later, and it decides how the machine feels in year four.
Our rule of thumb: Air with extra memory for students and writers; Pro for video, photo and software work that runs for hours.
