Studio Display vs third-party 5K monitors
Is Apple’s 27-inch display worth the premium, and which alternatives make sense for a Mac desk?
macOS looks its best at around 218 pixels per inch, which is why a 27-inch 5K panel is the gold standard for a Mac desk. For years, Apple’s Studio Display was almost the only option. That has changed.
What the Studio Display does well
- Sharp 5K panel with excellent uniformity.
- Six-speaker sound that is genuinely good.
- Single-cable setup: video, audio, camera and USB hub over Thunderbolt.
Where it falls short
The webcam is mediocre in low light, there is no HDR or high refresh rate, and the height-adjustable stand is an expensive option you choose at purchase.
The alternatives
Several manufacturers now sell 27-inch 5K monitors at lower prices. Image quality is close; speakers, build quality and stands vary. A 4K 27-inch monitor is cheaper still, but text looks slightly softer at the sizes macOS defaults to.
